Eat Your Way Round New York From Sunrise to Sunset ….

Come along and eat your way through NYC through classic films, from Breakfast at Tiffany’s to When Harry Met Sally. Listen to the full episode here

Breakfast

Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a classic Upper East Side New York Movie. You Can Finally Have Breakfast at Tiffany’s – well, almost ….. A few years ago, the Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York opened a luxury home and accessories collection on its fourth floor and launched the Blue Box Café. Located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street in Manhattan, New York City. The Blue Box Cafe is closed for renovations, so pencil in breakfast at Tiffany for 2023, when the store is reinvention at 727 Fifth Avenue will be completed.

You’ll find NY classics like smoked salmon and bagels on the menu, a salad with lobster, grapefruit and avocado, and a club sandwich named for the company’s founder.

Or perhaps, be like Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly, and bring your  own Danish and coffee and eat out of a paper bag, while you gaze in the jeweller’s window.

Breakfast – Lunch – Brunch

New York Pastrami Sandwich – Classic American diner

Hot Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwich – When Harry Met Sally – Katz Delicatessen 1989

Katz’s Delicatessen

Katz Deli had been open since 1888, not 1988 1888. It is a New York Jewish Deli. It is best known for the scene in When Harry Met Sally as the Lower East Side Deli that serves matzo ball soup, steak cut fries, corned beef hot sandwich, hot pastrami sandwich and a lively and mixed atmosphere. You will probably find lots of romcom-loving tourists here.

When Harry Met Sally became a cult movie, a famous scene was filmed here in Katz’s!

Pastrami sandwich has become a full-fledged American dish, especially Sally’s version with mustard and pickles. They serve both a hot pastrami sandwich and a hot corned beef sandwich. They are so similar, but both cuts of meat are slightly different. Both are brined and have a spice blend, but the difference is pastrami is smoked, and corned beef is boiled. It is a fascinating story of Irish and Jewish immigrants to the US, where these now infamous sandwiches came from. While there, order a side of matzo ball soup and a New York cheesecake for dessert. Or a bagel with lox and cream cheese

Mid-Afternoon Snack

Magnolia Bakery  – made famous by a scene in Sex and the City where Carrie and Miranda sit outside the bakery and discuss some life woes.

Food of Choice

  • Banana Pudding – It tastes like bananas, vanilla wafers, and rainbows. Perfect for a quintessential Magnolia Bakery experience.
  • Peanut Butter Icebox Bar – Layered with graham cracker, caramel, peanut butter whipped cream concoction, and cream cheese and topped with Reese’s peanut butter cups.
  • Or reenact your favourite SATC scene with a crush-worthy vanilla cupcake topped with pink vanilla buttercream and a daisy.

Milk Bar

Famous Milk Bar Pie Crack Pie – sticky, buttery, sweet, salty filling all housed in this hearty oat cookie crust. They are also famous for their red velvet cake and confetti-style birthday cake. It is like this transformation of simple ingredients into this extraordinary flavour.

MomoFuku (David Chang)

Noodle Bar in New York City. Credited with “the rise of contemporary Asian-American cuisine” by the New York Times and named the “most important restaurant in America” by Bon Appétit magazine.

Late Afternoon Refuel

New York Pizza Slice

One of the most famous movies to engrain in our brains that when we go to New York, we need a pizza slice is Saturday Night Fever. And the place that was made famous in that movie was Lenny’s Pizza. Now it is not just Lenny’s pizza slice alone; what is essential here is how you eat it.

Double Stack Style – John Travolta style – In the flick, John Travolta’s character Tony Manero goes into the shop, orders a pair of slices, and eats them stacked one on the other.

New York–style pizza is made with a characteristically large hand-tossed thin crust, often sold in wide slices to go. The crust is thick and crisp only along its edge, yet soft, light, and pliable enough beneath its toppings to be folded in half to eat.

Lenny’s has closed its doors, but the best alternative I can give you is Joe’s Pizza. Peter Parker briefly works as a delivery boy in Spiderman at Joe’s Pizza Downtown.

Mid Afternoon Refuel

Pharmacy 513 Henry St, Brooklyn, NY 11231, United States

A contemporary soda fountain in a historic apothecary serving egg creams, ice cream, wine, espresso, & hot chocolates.

Smith & Wollensky – located on the corner of Third Avenue and 49th Street.

This classic high-end American steakhouse is featured in American Psycho. In the 2000 film Christian Bale (who plays Patrick Bateman, the insane serial killer) orders his steak without hash-browns when dining at Smith & Wollensky’s. The restaurant was also featured in the Devil Wears Prada.

Finish Up With a Night Cap

Boiler Room

84th E and 4th Street

An alternative, mellow lounge bar with cheap drinks, the Boiler Room was also the spot for filming a scene from one of my favourites, PS I Love You.

Not Ready to Go Home

And if you decide to go OUT then, and if I were there, I would probably be heading to the Coyote Ugly Saloon at 153rd First Avenue. This is where Piper Perabo got her start in NYC as a dancer/bartender at Coyote Ugly.
