It was a pleasure to join RTÉ Radio 1 to chat about one of my favourite topics – how simple, everyday food choices can help us feel fuller, more energised and satisfied throughout the day.

So often, healthy eating is framed around restriction. We hear about cutting foods out, eating less or avoiding certain ingredients altogether. But I believe a much more sustainable approach is to think about what we can add to our meals instead. Small additions like extra fibre, quality protein and colourful fruit and vegetables can completely change how satisfying a meal feels, without making it any more complicated.

One of the ideas we explored during the conversation was satiety – that comfortable feeling of fullness after a meal, where you’re nourished, content and able to get on with your day without constantly thinking about your next snack. It’s not about feeling overly full; it’s about building meals that truly satisfy you.

That can be as simple as stirring cannellini beans into a tomato soup, adding chia seeds to your morning porridge, or including an extra piece of fruit alongside a snack. These small changes increase the fibre and protein in your meals, helping to support energy levels while keeping hunger at bay for longer.

We also spoke about the importance of making healthy habits practical. A homemade green smoothie, a nourishing batch of chia jam or keeping wholesome snacks within easy reach can make everyday choices feel effortless. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s creating routines that fit naturally into your lifestyle and help you feel your best.

"Healthy eating isn't about eating less. It's about eating well enough that you leave the table feeling nourished, satisfied and ready to enjoy the rest of your day."

Comfort food has an important place too. Nourishing meals don’t have to be salads or complicated recipes. Warming soups, hearty tray bakes, creamy porridge and colourful vegetable-packed dinners can all provide comfort while delivering the nutrients your body needs. Sometimes, it’s simply about making the meals you already love just that little bit more nourishing.

Healthy eating should never feel like a list of rules. By focusing on adding more goodness to your plate, rather than taking foods away, we can build habits that are enjoyable, realistic and sustainable for everyday life.
