Champagne Breakfasts, Sea Views & Long Lunches: A Stay At Hotel El Fuerte Marbella

From Champagne breakfasts and slow mornings by the pool to long lunches by the sea and evenings wandering Marbella Old Town, Hotel El Fuerte offers the kind of five-star stay that feels luxurious without ever being overly formal. After being impressed enough to return for a second visit, here’s why this beachfront Marbella hotel has become somewhere we can see ourselves returning to for years to come.
There are hotels you enjoy, and then there are the ones you find yourself thinking about long after you’ve checked out. The ones you quietly compare everywhere else to.
For us, Hotel El Fuerte Marbella was very much the latter.
Which is why, when we found ourselves planning another trip to Marbella, there was really only one place we wanted to stay.
This was our second visit and, if anything, we were even more impressed this time around. In a destination with no shortage of five-star addresses, El Fuerte gets something surprisingly difficult right: it feels luxurious without ever feeling formal.
Right on the beachfront, yet only a short stroll from the cobbled streets and restaurants of Marbella Old Town, it gives you two very different versions of the city in one stay. Slow mornings by the pool when you want to do very little. Long lunches by the sea. Then, ten minutes later, you can be wandering through whitewashed streets with a glass of wine and a bowl of olives in front of you.
The interiors are quietly elegant, the sea views are endlessly distracting and the service is warm without being overbearing. Nothing feels showy. Nothing feels like it’s trying too hard.
It is simply a very good hotel.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what makes somewhere worth returning to.
Getting There
We flew from Dublin to Málaga with Aer Lingus on an early-morning flight — an early start, but one we were happy to make for the promise of a full first day in Marbella.
The flight was smooth, the service was great and, happily, we moved through Málaga Airport without the queues we had expected.
From there, it’s around an hour by taxi to Marbella, depending on traffic, and something worth factoring into your budget. Expect to pay somewhere in the region of €80-€100.
It is a journey, particularly after an early start, but the arrival at El Fuerte makes you forget about it rather quickly.
The bags disappear with the concierge, you’re handed a drink and encouraged to relax while your room is prepared. No hovering around reception with suitcases. No sense that you need to be anywhere.
Just that lovely feeling of having arrived.
The Rooms: If You Can, Book The Sea View
If there is one place I would recommend spending a little more, it is here.
We stayed in a Selected Front Sea View Room and, for us, the upgrade was absolutely worth it.
There is something about waking up, pulling back the curtains and seeing the Mediterranean stretched out in front of you that immediately changes the pace of the day. Below us were the pools and palms; beyond them, the sea. It was the sort of view you don’t really get used to — even after four days.
The balcony quickly became one of our favourite spots in the room. Morning coffee. A quiet drink before dinner. Or simply ten minutes sitting outside doing absolutely nothing.
The room itself was spacious, calming and beautifully finished. Contemporary without feeling cold, elegant without being overly designed. Everything was exactly where you wanted it to be and, importantly, it felt like somewhere you genuinely wanted to spend time.
After a day by the pool or wandering around Marbella, coming back to the room felt like part of the holiday rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
The service, too, was faultless. Throughout our stay, the staff couldn’t have done more for us.
My advice? If the budget allows, book the front sea view. It is the upgrade I would make again.
Breakfast: Come Hungry
I don’t say this lightly: the breakfast at El Fuerte is one of the best hotel breakfasts we have ever had.
Not one of the best in Marbella. One of the best, full stop.
Breakfast here isn’t something you grab before heading to the pool. It is an event. And I mean that in the best possible way.
As Selected guests, we had our own separate lounge for breakfast, alongside access to the main buffet and an additional à la carte menu.
Then there was the food.
The kind of ripe, sweet fruit that somehow only ever tastes this good when you’re abroad. Fresh pastries. Yoghurts with endless toppings. Freshly made omelettes. Cooked breakfast options.
One morning there might be a whole section dedicated to açai bowls. The next, an impressive charcuterie display. There were fresh cakes and pastries, alongside an extraordinary selection of Spanish meats — including jamón carved freshly to order.
And because this is Marbella, there is also bottomless Champagne.
The trick is not to rush it.
Order something from the menu. Try the pastries. Go back for the fruit. Have a coffee. Have another.
Then inevitably, go back for one more thing.
My advice? Don’t book breakfast because it’s convenient. Book it because it is genuinely one of the best parts of the stay.
The Pools: Civilised, Calm & Wonderfully Unhurried
The pool scene at El Fuerte is perhaps best described as wonderfully civilised.
There are two pools, including an adults-only option, but what stood out to us wasn’t simply the setting. It was the atmosphere.
This is not a towel-on-a-sunbed-at-7am kind of hotel.
The pools don’t open until 9am and, even then, there is no great rush. Breakfast seems to stretch well into the morning, people take their time and it’s often closer to 11am before the pool areas start to properly fill up.
There is no panic.
No racing for a lounger.
No sense that your holiday has somehow become a competitive sport.
Instead, everyone seems to settle into the day at their own pace. A long breakfast. A slow walk back to the room. Then eventually, the pool.
The staff are equally lovely — friendly, attentive and always nearby when you need them, without constantly appearing at your elbow.
It is polished, relaxed and very easy to spend an entire day there.
The Wellness Offering
I am always interested in whether a hotel gym is somewhere you could work out or somewhere you might actually want to.
El Fuerte falls firmly into the second category.
The gym is excellent — spacious, beautifully equipped and more than capable of delivering a proper workout. Not an afterthought tucked away in a basement, but a genuinely impressive part of the hotel.
There is also the spa and hydrotherapy offering for anyone looking to lean fully into holiday mode.
Between the gym, spa and pools, this is one of those hotels where you can happily keep some semblance of a routine — or abandon it entirely.
Both feel equally appropriate.
Is It Good For Families?
This is where I think it is worth being honest.
Would I bring one or two children here? Absolutely.
There is a kids’ club at selected times of the year, and I did have a peek inside. It is lovely, but it isn’t enormous.
For me, though, El Fuerte is not a big family resort — and I actually think that distinction is important before booking.
There are no water slides, splash parks, large playgrounds or extensive indoor play areas. If keeping children entertained from morning until night is the priority, there are probably better options in Marbella.
But for couples, friends, solo travellers and families with one or two children who are happy spending their days between the pool, beach and exploring the Old Town? I think it works beautifully.
El Fuerte knows what it is.
And importantly, it doesn’t try to be everything to everyone.
Dining & Drinks: The Kind Of Hotel You Don’t Need To Leave
One of the things El Fuerte does particularly well is food.
There is enough variety that you could happily spend several days here without feeling as though you were eating the same thing twice — quite an achievement given how close you are to the restaurants of Marbella Old Town.
Levante: For Lunches That Become Afternoons
Levante quickly became one of our favourite spots.
Close to the pool, it is exactly where you want to be when the midday sun is at its strongest.
Something fresh to eat. A glass of cold wine. Absolutely nowhere else to be.
Lunch here has a habit of becoming an afternoon. You arrive intending to have something light, order a glass of wine and, before you know it, the idea of doing anything else has quietly disappeared.
And frankly, that’s exactly how a Marbella lunch should feel.
Soleo: A Table By The Sea
If Levante is where you go for an easy-going lunch, Soleo is where you settle in and make an occasion of it.
Set right on the beach, the menu draws on Mediterranean flavours, local seafood and traditional rice dishes, alongside lighter and more contemporary options.
We shared the Rice with Scarlet Shrimp — a dry rice dish with scarlet prawns, finished on the Josper grill — and it was delicious.
Served in the paella pan at the table, it had just the right amount of theatre without becoming overly formal.
With a chilled white sangria alongside it, this was one of those meals that immediately becomes part of the holiday.
The food was excellent, but the setting does a lot of the work too.
"Sometimes, the best way to treat yourself is simply to give yourself permission to enjoy it all. The Champagne breakfast. The sea view. The extra glass of wine at lunch. The afternoon with nowhere to be. El Fuerte Marbella is the kind of place that makes you remember that luxury doesn’t always have to mean more — sometimes, it’s simply having the time and space to enjoy what’s already in front of you."

A table by the sea.
Something cold to drink.
No reason to check the time.
My advice? Don’t rush Soleo. Give yourself an afternoon.
Kena & The Rooftop
The rooftop is another one of those spaces that reminds you why staying in a good hotel can be part of the experience.
As the light changes over Marbella and the Mediterranean, head upstairs for a drink before dinner and take it all in.
The rooftop is also home to Kena, adding another layer to the hotel’s dining offering and giving you another reason not to rush out the door every evening.
Because while Marbella Old Town is absolutely worth exploring, there are nights when the luxury of not having to go anywhere is equally appealing.
The Selected Lounge: Is The Upgrade Worth It?
For us, yes.
And this is coming from someone who is always slightly wary of upgrades that sound good on paper but don’t quite add up once you’re there.
The Selected Lounge is one of the things that genuinely changed the rhythm of our stay.
Open from 11am to 9pm, it gives Selected guests a private space to dip in and out of throughout the day.
Drinks, wines and beers are available alongside snacks, freshly prepared hummus and dips, sandwiches and sweet treats.
It sounds like a small thing.
It isn’t.
A coffee here. A glass of wine there. Something to eat in the afternoon. A drink before heading out for dinner. These things add up quickly when you’re paying individually.
But more than that, it simply makes the holiday feel easier.
You don’t think about ordering another drink. You don’t think about adding something to the room. You just pop in when you feel like it.
And for us, that is where the value really lies.
Combined with the separate breakfast experience and our sea-view room, the Selected package felt like a genuine upgrade rather than simply a different coloured wristband.
Marbella Old Town: Don’t Make A Plan
One of the biggest advantages of El Fuerte is that Marbella Old Town is right there.
Within minutes, you can leave the hotel behind and find yourself wandering through narrow cobbled streets, past whitewashed buildings and into little corners that seem to appear just when you think you’ve seen everything.
My advice?
Don’t make a plan.
Some of the best moments happen when you simply wander.
Take the smallest street. Turn down the alley you hadn’t intended to take. Stop when something catches your eye.
There are gorgeous little boutiques selling Mediterranean interiors, beautifully curated clothes and the sort of pieces that immediately make you wonder whether you left enough room in your suitcase.
Think linen. Woven textures. Beautiful ceramics. Effortless holiday dressing.
And then there are the bars.
Find a table outside, order a glass of wine or a cold local beer and ask for olives.
Then stay longer than you intended.
This, for me, is Marbella at its best.
Not the beach clubs. Not the obvious glamour. Not the polished nightlife.
Just warm air, cobbled streets, something cold in your hand and absolutely no idea where you’re going next.
The Final Verdict
There are plenty of beautiful hotels in Marbella.
There are bigger resorts. Hotels with more pools. Hotels with more restaurants. Hotels with considerably more fanfare.
But El Fuerte has something else.
It gets the balance right.
It is luxurious, but you never feel as though you have to behave differently because of it. Beautifully designed, but never intimidating. Relaxed enough for a day spent doing absolutely nothing, yet perfectly positioned for wandering into Marbella Old Town whenever you feel like exploring.
The food is excellent. The breakfast is genuinely extraordinary. The pools are calm. The service is warm. And the location gives you the freedom to have two entirely different holidays in one.
You can spend the day by the sea and be sitting in a tiny bar in the Old Town with wine and olives by the evening.
And perhaps that is why we came back.
Some hotels are wonderful for one memorable stay. Others become part of your own travel story — places you return to because you know exactly how they make you feel.
For us, El Fuerte Marbella is one of those places.
This was our second stay.
I have a feeling it won’t be our last.
In fact, I can see it being somewhere we return to for years to come.
And in a world with an ever-growing list of new hotels to try, I think that might just be the greatest compliment I can give it.
